The Challenge

A steel processing facility operating a coil slitting line began experiencing significant quality issues during production. The root cause was traced to excessive wear in the recoiler mandrel shaft bearings.

As the facility processed steel coils weighing up to 60,000 lbs., the worn bearings allowed the large mandrel shaft to sag under load. This shaft deflection negatively impacted coil winding accuracy, resulting in quality concerns, production inefficiencies, and the risk of unplanned downtime.

The customer needed a rapid solution that could be completed within a limited shutdown window while restoring equipment performance and product quality.

The Solution

DESCH deployed its field service team to perform a complete recoiler and mandrel shaft overhaul during a scheduled two-day shutdown.

The project included:

  • Complete disassembly of the recoiler assembly.
  • Removal and inspection of the mandrel shaft.
  • Identification of bearing wear contributing to shaft deflection.
  • Replacement of critical mandrel shaft bearings.
  • Precision reassembly and alignment of the recoiler system.
  • Verification of proper operation before returning the equipment to service.

By combining field service expertise with a planned maintenance approach, DESCH was able to complete the repair within the customer’s available outage window, minimizing disruption to production.

Product Spotlight

The machine is equipped with an uncoiler gearbox, engineered to provide controlled, reliable material unwinding in demanding production environments.

Key Outcomes

Restored mandrel shaft support and alignment.

Eliminated excessive shaft deflection under load.

Improved coil winding consistency and product quality.

Reduced risk of future equipment damage.

Completed within a two-day planned shutdown.

Returned critical production equipment to service quickly.

Customer Impact

For steel processors, product quality and equipment reliability are directly tied to profitability. Even minor deviations in recoiler performance can create downstream quality issues, scrap, rework, and production delays.

By identifying the root cause and executing a fast, efficient field repair, DESCH helped the customer restore confidence in their operation, improve finished coil quality, and avoid the much greater costs associated with extended downtime or catastrophic equipment failure.

The project demonstrates how DESCH’s field service expertise helps metals and steel processing customers maximize uptime, protect product quality, and keep production moving when critical equipment performance is on the line.
